The new Code has sections covering Staffing, Loading and Unloading and Reporting. There is also a linked Safety Check Sheet and a Sample Loading Plan.
An earlier draft code started trials in May 2009 and feedback on the Code has been taken in the interim.
“The new Code, which sets out minimum standards, represents a lot of work by a lot of people and we are obliged to them all. The guidance promises to make a really valuable contribution to efforts by employers and staff to improve the health and safety record of the theatrical sector,” commented Willy Donaghy, supervisory official.
BECTU has urged its representatives and members to ensure that the Code is fully implemented for all staff, both resident and touring, at their venues.
BECTU and the TMA are continuing talks about the training of the first group of staff, likely to be local technical managers or their equivalents, to support the adoption of the new agreement.
