The Society of London Theatre today announced the nominations for the 2010 Olivier Awards, recognising the best of the shows that have opened in London’s West End over the last twelve months.
Congratulations to all of the nominees, in particular the lighting designers: Kevin Adams, Jon Clark and Mark Henderson.
Henderson, a multiple previous winner of the award, has been nominated twice this year, for Burnt By The Sun at the National Theatre’s Lyttelton, and for Enron, now playing at the Noël Coward Theatre. Kevin Adam’s nomination is for Spring Awakening, a design which won him the Tony Award for Best Lighting in 2007 for the show’s New York debut. Jon Clark’s nomination is for Three Days Of Rain at the Apollo Theatre.
In the other design categories, nominations for Best Set Design have gone to Mark Thompson for England People Very Nice at the National, Anthony Ward for Enron, Ultz for Jerusalem and Christopher Oram for Red at the Donmar, for Best Costume Design to Peter McKintosh for Hello, Dolly! at Regent’s Park, Christopher Oram for Madame De Sade at the Wyndham’s, Amy Roberts for The Misanthrope at the Comedy, and Tim Chappel and Lizzy Gardiner for Priscilla at the Palace. The Best Sound Design nominees are Christopher Shutt for Every Good Boy Deserves Favour at the National, Ian Dickinson for Jerusalem, Andrew Bruce and Nick Lidster for Mother Courage And Her Children at the National, and Brian Ronan for Spring Awakening.
Leading the nominees across all categories are the Royal Court’s plays Enron and Jerusalem, the Donmar Warehouse with ten nominations spread across shows at both its own base and for its year long residency at the Wyndham’s Theatre, and the National Theatre which has nine nominations across six productions. Performers nominated include Gillian Anderson, Mackenzie Crook, James Earl Jones, Jude Law, Keira Knightley and Rachel Weisz.
Presented annually by the Society of London Theatre, the Laurence Olivier Awards are presented to shows opening in the West End between January 1st and December 31st each year. A full list of nominees can be found at the SOLT website, www.officiallondontheatre.co.uk.
