Congratulations to lighting designers Paule Constable and Brian MacDevitt, winners of this year’s Tony Award for, respectively, Best Lighting Design of a Play and Best Lighting Design of a Musical at New York’s illustrious theatre award ceremony, which took place this Sunday, June 12th.
Paule Constable won the prize for her dramatic lighting of War Horse, the smash-hit play which was created at London’s National Theatre, then transferred to the New London Theatre with a rig supplied by White Light. The New York production of the show opened at the Lincoln Centre this Spring, to great acclaim. The work of many other members of the show’s creative team was also rewarded by the Tony voters, Rae Smith receiving the award for Best Scenic Design of a Play, Christopher Shutt winning the Best Sound Design of a Play category, writer Nick Stafford collecting the Best Play award, and directors Marianne Elliott and Tom Morris chosen as Best Directors of a Play. The Handspring Puppet Company, who created the show’s remarkable on-stage horses, were presented with a Special Tony Award for their work.
Brian MacDevitt collected the Tony for Best Lighting Design of a Musical for his work on The Book of Mormon, the new musical written by Trey Parker and Matt Stone (creators of the TV show South Park) with Robert Lopez (part of the team behind AvenueQ). The show enjoyed an enormously successful Tony night, winning nine categories including Best Scenic Design of a Musical for Scott Pask, Best Sound Design of a Musical for Brian Ronan, Best Direction of a Musical for Casey Nicholaw and Trey Parker, and the overall Best Musical award.
