JR Clancy, the US-based manufacturer of theatre rigging systems, has supplied 33 PowerLift automated hoists to the Teatro Municipal de Portimão (TEMPO) in the Algarve region of southern Portugal. They were proposed to the client and installed by ADT Fire & Security (a Tyco International Company) – Europe’s leading provider of electronic security and fire protection solutions.
JR Clancy’s international sales manager Charles Shatzkin explains: “ADT told us that the client was looking to motorise their rigging system and wanted a fast, safe, reliable and quiet powered hoist. The Clancy Automated Rigging System has a variable speed capability up to 0.6 m/sec and produces sounds no louder than those heard in a whisper-quiet library.”
“The theatre also specified a SceneControl 500 – a powerful control console which provides a 3D visualisation of the performance space. The SceneControl is virtually unmatched in features and price: its functionality is as powerful as other consoles two or three times as expensive, making it an ideal choice.
“The client told ADT Fire & Security that they were looking at other products but had some issues with their presentation and equipment. We arranged with ADT a visit to an installation to see PowerLift’s real-world performance, as well as getting a full demonstration of the SC500. This, plus their comfort with the Clancy team and the knowledge that they would get the service and backup they needed, sealed the deal.”
Manufactured at JR Clancy’s facility in New York State, the systems have been proven in installations across North America and Europe. The PowerLift’s dual brake technology protects the load on both the motor and transmission sides of the hoist, ensuring absolutely safety in the unlikely event of a hoist failure (whether with the motor or the transmission).
Shatzkin continues: “We included special low-capacity custom PowerLifts for the side tabs; because they are only ever going to be for lower weight loads, we needed to limit the hoists’ lifting power. That way we can be sure that the total safe working capacity of the lines can never be exceeded.”
“We have had a long relationship with ADT Fire & Security and have worked with them on a number of projects in Europe. As a division of the worldwide Tyco International Ltd, our partner combines the logistical resources of a large company with expertise in the needs of the entertainment business. This gave the customer a solid feel about us and our dealer’s ability to not only installs the project correctly but to provide after sales service in a timely manner.”
Tempo hosts a range of performances for up to 500 people, from jazz and dance to plays and children’s performances.
Shatzkin has just completed a tour of the UK with Hoist UK, demonstrating the benefits of JR Clancy’s systems. He is set to visit the UK again in September, when he will be demonstrating a range of the company’s products at the PLASA show in London.
