White Light recently took part in TheatreCraft 2010, a careers fair for those interested in a career behind-the-scenes in theatre which took place at the London Coliseum on November 22nd.
Organised by Masterclass, a programme providing those interested in the worlds of theatre, film and television with expert guidance and support, TheatreCraft was open to anyone aged 17-25 interested in working backstage, giving them a chance to learn more about the career paths available – from stage management to wig-making to lighting to writing to designing – and meet and learn from those already working in the industry.
Those attending the event, which was a sold-out hit, got to meet representatives from organisations including English National Opera, the National Youth Theatre, the Royal Shakespeare Company, the Stage Management Association and the Theatres Trust, as well as drama schools including Guildhall, Northbrook College, Rose Bruford, the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and others. They were also able to attend a variety of workshops and practical sessions.
“The claim for TheatreCraft was that it would be informal, fun, interactive and packed with information, and that all turned out to be true,” comments White Light’s Managing Director Bryan Raven, one of several White Light staff to attend the event. “Those who attended had a unique opportunity to meet those working in their fields of interest, and we had a chance to meet what might well turn out to be the next generation of lighting designers, production electricians and other technicians. We had a great day – and look forward to meeting those who do choose to make their careers in lighting again in the future.”
TheatreCraft – about which more information can be found at www.masterclass.org.uk/theatrecraft – is just one of the many ways that White Light supports those looking to learn more about lighting; the company also supports the work of many of the leading drama colleges in London and around the country, offers lighting workshops for schools, and offers lighting hire, sales, support, service and, of course, advice to those designing the lighting for school productions or maintaining or updating school lighting rigs.
