Raoul Simpson, was recently commissioned to create two site specific light installations by curator Carl Slater for an exhibition entitled SITU, held from 18th August to 3rd September at the Holy Trinity Church Tattershall, Lincolnshire.
The commissions are made up of two pieces, ‘Moondial’ a time based light installation to the exterior of the bell tower and ‘Kinetic Pixels’, an interactive light installation sited either side of the main aisle in the church. Support for the projects was given by Richard Martin Lighting (IP65 Thomas Pixelline 1044, Ether-Lynx ArtNET), PRG Lighting (cabling) and ChamSys (control for ‘Moondial’).
The pieces in brief:
Moondial
An external and responsive light installation to the north facade of Holy Trinity Church, Tattershall’s bell tower. Between the hours of 9pm to 12am and 6am to 8am, the bell tower may be used to indicate the time in the darkness, where each hour is a set predetermined colour.
This is achieved with a row of IP65 rated Thomas Pixelline 1044 to the foot of the bell tower, focused so as to give an even glow to the 6m x 20m facade.
Control for the piece came from ChamSys Magic Q PC running with a ChamSys Ethernet interface, where cues (colours) were triggered dependent on the hour of the day.
Equipment used:
4 x Pixelline 1044 IP65,
1 x Laptop c/w ChamSys Magic Q PC,
1 x ChamSys Ethernet interface,
Kinetic Pixels
An internal interactive light installation positioned eitherside of the aisle in the Holy Trinity Church, Tattershall. Triggered by the movement of patrons as they pass up or down the aisle, their movement is mapped to the pixels / cells of each the Thomas Pixelline 1044 that line either side of the central aisle.
A miniature CCTV camera up high above the aisle is focused between the two rows of Pixelline. The feed from this is then digitised and fed into a Catalyst media server whereupon it is ‘Pixel mapped’ to the pixelline and a DMX signal output through an Artistic License Ether-Lynx ArtNET unit.
Equipment used:
4 x Pixelline 1044 IP65,
1 x ‘Bullet’ Colour CCTV camera,
1 x Laptop c/w Catalyst 4.10 DV,
1 x Canopus ADVC55 Video to Firewire ,
1 x Artistic License Ether-Lynx ArtNET,
