It’s that time of year again – the glitz, the glamour, the speculation about our favourite Hollywood couples, the anticipation about those infamous acceptance speeches – it is of course the night of the Oscars 2010!
Claudia Winkleman presented the show on Sky Movies. Lighting Designer Malcolm Reed opted for Chroma Flood TC’s and Alpha Beam 300’s, provided by Richard Martin Lighting, to help create a sumptuous late night ambiance to a chic retro set. Assisting the chosen specification were Pixeline 1044 which Malcolm had previously purchased from the company, giving him the opportunity to play around with a painted sky line ‘back drop’ mixing up colours to get the desired look.
When asked about his specification choice Malcolm explained “The Oscars set replicates an apartment overlooking LA from the Hollywood Hills, so my main reason for using the Alpha Beam 300 was that I needed an exceptionally bright and narrow beam animated light source to imitate Oscars night sky dancing lights with a little bit of atmospheric “haze” The cameras would see very powerful beams of light dancing across the Sky Line giving the impression that the we could be in LA.
For part of the set dressing – lighting plants, water features and louvered windows, I wanted a wide beamed LED Light source so I chose the Chroma Flood 200 TC. For me this was an ideal light as it gave the beam spread that I was looking for, a great colour range and being Tri colour LED’s I get very good and strong colour coverage”.
