MILOS trussing is being utilised in style in several major pavilions at the 2010 Shanghai Expo, supplied by Guangzhou based MILOS China in conjunction with MILOS’ HQ in the Czech Republic.
Five major Pavilions – USA, UAE, Canada, Singapore and the China Information & Communications Pavilion are all featuring MILOS products – chosen for their quick assembly, strength and superior aesthetics.
Information & Communications Pavilion – Extending City Dreams
The pavilion suggests a dream-like light fantasy on the exterior and takes visitors on an interactive, fun journey exploring cutting-edge information and communication technologies, their applications and potential influence over the next 10 years in the context of how this can help improve people’s daily lives .
The pavilion is built by China Mobile and China Telecom, and utilizes cold water from the Expo site to regulate the indoor temperature, helping to reduce energy consumption and emissions. Most of the construction materials are recyclable and environmentally-friendly, and after dark, the pavilion’s surface changes color.
A variety of MILOS products are used in this space showing the great versatility of the range. All the indoor structures in here are supported with MILOS which is hanging many production elements including frames with screens, curtains and drapes, lights, speakers, etc.
MILOS Duo truss is usually used for lightweight applications like frames and projection screens, while the Quatro range is designed for heavier loads.
Nearly two hundred metres of MILOS M520 (Quatro) 50 x 50 cm QuickTruss is used extensively in the pavilion to form a large mother grid.
M520 is a high-capacity system consisting of fixed and folding formats. The folding version reduces storage and transportation volume by 70% and is quickly assembled to its load-bearing condition without any additional tools.
BTP 22.5m ladder truss is used for a massive banner hang, and Duo (BTU) 288m ladder trussing is also utilised, complete with HU21 Duo Corners
MILOS M290 “U” aluminium Quatro 30 cm trussing in an arched format facilitates the hanging of lighting and AV equipment throughout the pavilion. This is also available in heavy-duty ”V” range formats, which offers great spanning and weight loading capabilities …. plus a decorative touch. Different shapes and permutations can effortlessly be created when combined with MILOS QCU21 corners.
MILOS HU21 corners are used to help hang a large screen. These create special angles – in this case of 147, 154 and 170 degrees.
Over 200 pieces of MILOS Cell 209 – an extended parallel coupler – are used throughout.
Singapore Pavilion – Urban Symphony
The music-box-like Singapore Pavilion is a two-story structure with an “Urban Symphony” theme, inspired by the harmony of several unique elements in Singapore: progress and sustainability, urbanization and greenery, tradition and modernity and a cosmopolitan mix of residents living peacefully together.
MILOS’ ever popular M290 Quatro trussing – a total of 97 metres – is used to create positions for sound, lighting and AV equipment.
The M290 product was selected by NeoYong Aik, General Manager of Perfectus China, a partner of MILOS for the Expo Shanghai. He was very impressed that MILOS could supply all the products needed at short notice, and also generally by the build and engineering quality of MILOS.
Once again, the trussing was also chosen for its superior aesthetics as well as its strength.
30 pieces of CS3U ceiling supports were used under the roof to hang the truss. These consist of a solid steel bar and two polished clamps with a SWL of 500Kgs, that attaches via the eye on the top of the CS3U being secured to eyes in the ceiling with a steel rope
Canadian Pavilion – The Living City
The space is approximately 6000 square metres, and shaped like a looped ribbon or the letter “C”. Visitors enter through an open-air public square which is the pavilion’s centre piece, and then circulate through the larger structure that houses the public displays.
The pavilion touches upon the vitality of cities with the theme “The Living City: Inclusive, Sustainable, Creative.” and is the hub of a wide array of special events and activities. The presentation aims to give a brand-new impression of Canada to visitors, replacing stereotypes of cold and vast tracts of land.
Once again MILOS flexible M290 Quatro (QTU) trussing is featured – 292 metres of it – plus CQUD1 half circle pieces, which are utilised to make up a 12.7 metre semi circle, all of which facilitates the rigging of lighting and AV equipment.
USA Pavilion – Rise To The Challenge
The USA Pavilion is a massive grey steel structure designed to resemble an eagle stretching its wings in welcome. The pavilion presents a dynamic and emotional story that conveys four core concepts: sustainability, teamwork, health and the spirit of striving for success. The exhibition tells the story of the American spirit of perseverance, innovation, and community-building in a multi-dimensional, hi-tech presentation. It presents the US as a place of opportunity and diversity where people come together to change their communities for the better.
It features M290 Duo configured in 2 massive semi circles, each of 33m diameter.
UAE Pavilion – Power of Dreams
The exterior of this Pavilion is shaped like a giant modernist sand dune and occupies approximately 6000 square metres.
The outer covering of the pavilion is gold-coloured stainless steel with an undulating roof, looking as if it has been shaped by the wind, which makes the pavilion shimmer and change colours, reminding visitors of the Middle East’s dynamic mix of natural elements and environments.
Via a virtual journey, visitors can learn about the spirit of the UAE’s people who have created life in the desert and learned from their predecessors how to create shade, escape heat and to survive in a harsh environment. The path features flower beds, trees and foliage, creating a fantasy scene that contrasts completely with the dunes. ‘Without the wisdom of people, there will be no miracle.’
MILOS M290 is in action again here – both Quatro and Duo versions of this product – used as frames surrounding large projection screens.
The Quatro is configured as a 13.2 by 5.2m frame, and the Duo (BTVU) as a 15 x 6.38 metre screen support.
It uses a Conical Connection system and is available in custom lengths and junctions, and lends itself ideally to curved shapes. It comes in Natural Silver or a wide variety of powder coated colours and finishes.
Michal Zykan from MILOS Czech Republic worked closely with Stephen Huang from MILOS China to ensure that the delivery of all the required metalwork went smoothly as the pavilions were constructed.
He comments, “This is a very prestigious project in which to be involved, and as is often the case, timescale was the big challenge. It was also a great example of the Czech and Chinese offices working together to meet deadlines with demands of client and delivery in record time, and a great testament to the production capabilities of MILOS’s Guangzhou manufacturing facility”.
With the wide and dynamic range of MILOS products available, they were able to supply trussing and metalwork to meet the requirements in just a two week timeframe!
